Steps to Buy a Home: Hiring Movers and Packer

Jennifer Caywood: Nashville, Tennessee Real Estate

Now that we’ve cleared inspections and the appraisal is complete, it’s safe to hire movers and start packing!

Call now to get moving estimates and secure a mover. Especially during the BUSY summer months and holiday season, call early because movers can be booked weeks in advance.

If you’re moving into a condo building, let’s check with the HOA president or property management company to see if you need to pay any move-in fees, if there are move-in restrictions such as times of day or specific days and elevator usage.

Remember that you can’t move into your new place until closing is complete. You’ll be given the keys at the closing table after your signature is on every paper.

I want to close at 11am. We generally can’t reserve a specific time for closing in advance although we can usually request AM or PM. AM starts around 9am and PM starts around 1pm. Allow up to 3 hours for closing, although we’ll hope to be done much sooner than that. For instance, if your closing starts at 9am expect you may not be finished until 11 or even noon. Allow enough time to get all of your papers complete before the movers are scheduled to arrive.

We don’t often know the exact time and location of closing until a few days before. Be certain your movers are flexible and can work with any changes.

Consult my resource page for movers and packers.

Whoever you hire or even if you decide to go it alone, I highly recommend using wardrobe boxes for all of your hanging clothes. This keeps you from having to take everything off hangers and using (buying) tons of boxes. Instead, these boxes are designed for you to grab everything in your closets that is hanging, put them on the rods inside these boxes and when you’ve arrived at your new place, you just grab the hangers and hang the items back up. Saves you a ton of time!

Moving Supplies

Start gathering boxes and packing supplies. You can find free boxes on CraigsList, through your neighborhood LISTSERV or at a liquor store. Otherwise, Uhaul, Uline, and big box stores have them too.

Pets

Moving can be incredibly stressful on pets. Consider having them stay with a friend or in daycare for a few days while you move and get settled into your new place. They may also need time adjust to the sounds and smells of your new home.
